  • Volunteer Opportunities

    Volunteer Opportunities

How can I help? Become a volunteer! AYSO is a volunteer-run organization. Coaches, referees and administrators are all volunteers. Over 220,000 parents, neighbors, relatives and friends lend their time and talents so that each child gets a terrific AYSO experience. AYSO’s volunteer foundation ensures that it’s all about what’s good for kids. AYSO operates in a business manner, but volunteers ensure its “profits” are happy, healthy kids playing a sport they can enjoy for life. AYSO has developed special training that helps parents who may have little or no soccer experience quickly gain the age-appropriate knowledge and skills they need to be effective coaches and referees. It also has unique administrative and management training. This ensures that each community program:
    • Abides by the AYSO philosophies
    • Offers a great AYSO experience
    • Continues to grow, offering the AYSO opportunity to more children
It only takes a few hours to become qualified as an introductory-level coach or referee. But if you’re not able to commit even that much time, there are many small jobs you can help with. Even a couple of hours each season are an important contribution to your team and Region! AYSO training doesn’t stop as long as you’re having fun. Referees, coaches and administrators have clinics, workshops and other advanced training available to advance their skills. Volunteer Positions:
    • Coaches
    • Referees
    • Team Parents
    • Concession Stand Workers
    • Painting the Field Lines
    • VIP Buddy Coaches
For more information please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, volunteer@kentwoodayso.org , our Facebook page, our Twitter feed or our hotline 616-531-2552

  • Whew! I’ve registered! Now what happens?

Whew! I’ve registered! Now what happens? Fall 2014 What is the Board doing? Immediately after registration ends, your Regional Board begins the process of putting the teams together and scheduling games for the upcoming season. When this is completed, the uniforms will be ordered and the coaches will be notified.   When do the coaches get their team rosters? Coaches should expect to receive their team rosters mid-August.   When do the players get called? Teams may begin practice around the third week of August. The coaches will call the players usually from mid to late August. They will give you all the information you will need in regards to practice times and location. Each coach sets his/her own practice days, time and location. The practice fields are located at Crestwood & Pinewood.   It’s after mid-August and my child has not been contacted.  What do I do? Please do not panic if you see teams practicing and your child has not been called. Not all teams begin practice at the same time. The very young teams, in particular, do not always begin practice in August. Also some coaches may be out of town. If your child has not been called by August 29, you should send a message to our Hotline at 616.531.2552, or our Facebook page, our Twitter feed, our “Contact Us” on our website or our Regional Commissioner, Cory Kirkbride at rc@kentwoodayso.org.   What else does my child need? The registration fee includes: uniform jersey and supplemental accident insurance. In addition, you may need to obtain shorts, socks, shoes, shin guards, a soccer ball (size depends on age) and a water bottle. Shin guards must be worn under socks.   How often are practices and games? Practices are held once a week (field and times to be determined by your child’s coach). Games will be on Saturdays with the first game on September 6, 2014. Games and practices will be held at a field in Kentwood. Game fields for some in the older divisions may be in another region.   Refunds? Players withdrawing prior to the first practice of the season will be issued a full refund. After September 6, 2014 all requests for a refund must be submitted in writing and sent to the Regional Commissioner via email at rc@kentwoodayso.org   Please Remember… AYSO is a parent-based volunteer organization established to provide a positive experience for our children. Go to the games. Learn the rules. Above all, be tolerant of the children’s coaches and referees mistakes and weaknesses.   Questions? Contact our Hotline at 616.531.2552, or our Facebook page, our Twitter feed, our “Contact Us” on our website or our Regional Commissioner, Cory Kirkbride at rc@kentwoodayso.org.   Dates to Remember… September 6 – First game of season October 25  – Last game of season
